Chris Edwards pots Stalybridge Snooker League title
THE Stalybridge Snooker League’s individual billiards’ final saw Chris Edwards, of Mossley ‘B’ come from behind to beat Dan Tipping, from Hyde SC, 2-1.
In the best of three frames final, Tipping easily won the first 100-10 and was only a few points from winning the second and the trophy until a fantastic comeback saw Edwards snatch the frame 100-98 to set up the decider that he edged 100-86.
This effectively brought the league season to an end and all that remains is presentation night on September 14 when all the trophies will be presented and there will be a last knockout competition that is open to all league members attending on the night.
It is time to look forward to next season which will not start until the end of September.
This season started on a high with four teams being increased to six when Hyde Snooker and Staly Vegas (originally Stalybridge Labour), joined. This high was dented a little when part way through the season St George’s resigned after more than 30 years in the league and hopefully they will return soon.
They finished with teams but there is one new team lined up already so they should start with a minimum of six teams.
On the trophy front all teams have secured silverware to collect in September with the majority of the trophies being won by the two Mossley teams and Hyde.
It was nice to see that despite the disruptions part way through the season, the league continued to be played in a sporting and friendly manner. Both the new teams must be congratulated for the way they have settled in so well and of course have some trophies to show for their first season.
The annual meeting will be on September 20 with the pre-annual meeting scheduled for the August 30 when they discuss any areas brought up during the season and prepare the proposals for the annual meeting.
The new league season is scheduled to start on September 27with the traditional openers of the George Fletcher Trophy (snooker) and the Gordon Clay (whist), where league champions play cup winners. The full season starts one week later.
