League chairman Phil is given long-service award
PHIL Vidler, chairman of the Stalybridge Snooker League, has been handed a long-service award.
Traditionally the league rewards players who have been in the league for more than 30 years and this year it was presented to Phil who joined the league in 1985.
He originally played for St George’s as he did for the majority of his league career until he joined the newly-formed St Peters following the merger of St George’s and Sportsman.
Phil also played at Dukinfield Town Hall for several years before moving to Hassell Street Club when the snooker rooms were closed.
Here he helped to start St George’s ‘B’ and eventually both teams moved to Lime Street Club and then currently to St Peter’s.
Phil has won the individual snooker championship, the whist wooden spoon, won and finished runner up in the Roy Nelson snooker doubles trophy.
On a team front his club have won the snooker league title, the whist league, the Taylor Cup and the Gordon Clay Trophy on several occasions.
Phil has not neglected his duty to the league and is the current chairman and treasurer. He has also been captain of St George’s and St Peter’s.
He can play snooker and whist but enjoys playing billiards most of all and is always looking to improve his game as well as the well-being of the league.
In fact he has recently introduced a Sportsmanship Cup in an attempt to promote fair play throughout the league.
Phil has been an important member of the committee and is well respected by everyone.
