Snooker League Update – End of Season
The Stalybridge Snooker League came to a close recently with the Individual Billiards Final and Chris Edwards of Mossley B played Dan Tipping of Hyde SC over the best of three frames.
The first frame was won by Dan quite easily 100-10 and he was only a few points from winning the second frame and the trophy when after a fantastic comeback Chris won it 100-98 to set up the decider. Chris eventually won a close third frame 100-86 and won by two frames to one. Congratulations to both finalists on getting to the final and making it so tight.
This effectively brought our league season to an end and all that remains is the presentation night on Friday, September 14 when all the trophies will be handed out. There will also be one last knockout competition, which will be the same as last year, Killer and it is open to all league members attending on the night.
As we have now finished another season it is time to look forward to next season which will not start until the end of September/early October. This season started on a high with our four teams being increased to six when Hyde Snooker and Staly Vegas [originally called Staly Labour], joined us . This high was dented a little when part way through the season St Georges resigned after over 30 years in the league and hopefully they will return soon. We have finished with five teams but there is one new team lined up already so we should start with a minimum of six teams.
On the trophy front all teams have secured some silverware to collect in September with the majority of the trophies being won by the two Mossley teams and Hyde. It was nice to see that despite the team disruptions part way through the season, the league continued to be played in a sporting and friendly manner. Both the new teams must be congratulated for the way they have settled in so well and of course have some trophies to show for their first season. Thanks to everyone who has made this season so memorable.
Our AGM will be on 20th September with the Pre AGM scheduled for the 30th August, when we discuss any areas brought up during the season and prepare the proposals for the AGM. These may lead to rule changes for the 2018/19 season.
The new league season is scheduled to starton 27th September with the traditional openers of The George Fletcher Trophy (snooker) and The Gordon Clay (whist), where league champions play cup winners. The full season starts one week later.
We are now approaching the time of year when we contact local clubs to see if they would like to join us from next season. For more information, contact: ian.stalybridgesnooker@outlook.com. You can also call Ian Hopton on 07736678303
